October 6, 2000 was one of the proudest days of my life. That was the day the second phase of the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo was dedicated. I had been privileged to serve on the citizens committee largely responsible for overseeing the fundraising, design and construction of the Riverwalk. It was finished on time and on budget and on a very cold and rainy day (a rarity in October in Pueblo) it was dedicated to the citizens of Pueblo. The Riverwalk is built on the original channel of the Arkansas River which was diverted from the downtown area after the historic and devistating flood of 1921. A beautiful mural we refer to as the "Floodwall" recounts the history of Pueblo before and after the flood with a beautiful graphic of the flood as a wave as its centerpiece. The Riverwalk is about five city blocks long at this stage of its construction. A third phase of the project is about to begin construction. When completed Gateway Park, as it is called, will take the Riverwalk toward the convention center, another beautiful project constructed in the 1990's. The walkway and waterflow begins at Lake Elizabeth and flows south to Runyan park where it rejoins the river's main channel. To learn more about why I am so excited about this centerpiece of our community check out the pictures and links below.
